| What is The Tall Ships’ Races all about? |
|
The Tall Ships’ Races is an annual event organised by Sail Training International and supported by Antwerp. In 2009 Sovcomflot is also a presenting partner. The event (formerly known as the Cutty Sark Tall Ships’ Races) is a gathering of the greatest and most beautiful tall ships sailing across the oceans. Every year a fleet of around hundred wind-powered vessels call at four host ports drawing in huge crowds of visitors. On the way between the ports the fleet compete in the races. The most impressive and getting the most attention is, of course, the regatta of the largest sailing ships (Class “A”). However, the races of smaller yachts are equally important, not only for participating crews. Nowadays, not the results are the most essential, but the idea of sail training as well as building international friendship and understanding. During the fleet’s stay in host cities young sailors from around the world can meet each other and invite millions of visitors to their decks. Festive, colourful parades, concerts, firework displays, sport competitions – all these events create a memorable atmosphere in each city en route. The highlight is, undisputedly, the magnificent parade of sail. The roadsteads are then full of hundreds of vessels – great tall ships, yachts and motorboats and dinghies.
